Trading Day

The Global Trading Day

The four principal foreign exchange sessions run in sequence around the clock from Monday to Friday, each opening as the previous one winds down. Times below are shown in your selected timezone.

Trading Sessions

Follow the Global Trading Day

Foreign exchange is traded over the counter rather than on a central exchange. The four sessions below are market conventions describing when each region's participants are most present.

Market Activity

When Global Markets Overlap

Participation and liquidity vary through the trading day. Where two regional sessions are open at the same time, a larger number of participants is active in the market simultaneously.

Typically Higher Activity

London & New York

For several hours each afternoon in London, European and North American participants are in the market at the same time. This period commonly sees the highest volume of activity in the global foreign exchange market, and covers a large share of the day's economic releases from both regions.

Higher activity can also be associated with increased volatility, wider price movement and faster changes in quoted prices. It does not necessarily represent a preferable trading period for every strategy, instrument or account type. This information is provided for general educational purposes only.

Global Exchanges

Major Financial Markets

Regular trading hours for the principal securities exchanges by region. These are official exchange venues, distinct from the over-the-counter foreign exchange sessions shown above.

Market Activity

Markets Across the Trading Day

Different instruments tend to see their greatest participation at different points in the day, generally when the markets most closely associated with them are open. The windows below are indicative and shown in your selected timezone.

Typical periods of higher activity describe general market behaviour observed over time. They are not forecasts, recommendations or an indication of when any client should trade.

Market Calendar

Upcoming Global Market Holidays

Track scheduled closures, early closes and modified trading sessions across major international financial markets.

Holiday schedules are compiled from official exchange calendars and are provided for general information. Dates marked subject to exchange confirmation may be amended by the relevant exchange closer to the date. National public holidays do not automatically close an exchange, and over-the-counter foreign exchange trading is not necessarily suspended when an equity market is closed.

    Important Information

Trading hours shown on this page are provided for general informational purposes. Actual trading availability may vary by instrument, liquidity provider, public holiday, daylight-saving change, market condition and the applicable trading schedule.

Session times for foreign exchange are market conventions rather than official exchange hours, and are not a statement of when any instrument is available to trade. Exchange hours refer to regular trading sessions and exclude pre-open, auction, post-close and after-hours phases where these apply.

Clients should refer to Royce Capitals' applicable Contract Specifications and trading terms for product-specific trading hours and terms. Nothing on this page constitutes investment advice, a recommendation or an invitation to trade.
